Cardiff Council Wins National Credit Union Title

Cardiff Council won a national award for encouraging more than 1,500 employees and tenants to save and borrow responsibly from their local credit union.

The local authority has won the title of Payroll Partner (Public Sector) of Wales Credit Unions for the second time due to their successful 27 year partnership with Cardiff & Vale Credit Union.

Their payroll partnership – considered the most successful in Wales – is celebrated as it exemplifies the Cardiff Council’s commitment to supporting the social welfare of the workforce and tenants by enabling them to access to a range of affordable financial services from their community cooperative.

Finance Councilor Chris Weaver said, “The payroll deduction system is a vital benefit for staff because it is an ethical way to save and an affordable way to borrow.

“It’s such an easy way to put money aside for those tough financial times and borrow a manageable amount when needed.

“It helps our staff immensely and we are very proud to receive this award in recognition of our excellent partnership with Cardiff & Vale Credit Union. “

The credit union’s long-standing partnership with Cardiff Council remains an example of good practice in the UK, with the Council having already won the award in 2018, which has led to more focus on improving visibility the benefits of the partnership for their employees.

Leanne Herberg, Managing Director of Cardiff & Vale Credit Union, said: “Cardiff Council’s support as an employer is second to none in Wales, setting an exemplary example in promoting financial well-being in the place. working for the benefit of both staff and the wider Cardiff community. “

Cardiff Council is one of nine winners of this year’s Credit Unions Awards, which are sponsored by the Welsh Forum of the Association of British Credit Unions Ltd (ABCUL) with support from the Welsh Government.
