In February 2020, evidence found at the crime scene was taken for DNA and sent to the HPD-SIS lab for analysis. Reference DNA samples collected from Belluomini and obtained from Moreno were also sent.
In May 2020, the Maui Police Criminal Investigation Division was informed that DNA recovered from a blood sample from evidence near the deceased belonged to Belluomini. In addition, DNA recovered from blood samples from other evidence found at the crime scene belonged to Moreno. For this cold case, the evidence is significant.
On December 5, 2019, at around 9:00 a.m., officials from the Palm Beach Sheriffs Maritime Unit in Palm Beach, Florida arrested Anthony Moreno for the rape and murder of Kimberly Belluomini in 2000 at his residence in Kihei.
In October 2000, Belluomini and Moreno were at Henry’s Bar in Kihei. They went to his apartment in South Point. The next morning, Belluomini was found dead in her apartment. At the time of the initial investigation, Moreno was questioned as a person of interest in the case, but no charges were brought against him. Since then, detectives in the Criminal Investigation Division of the Maui Police Department have pursued the case and have successfully filed an indictment against Moreno.
In the meantime, Moreno has resided both in Texas and more recently in Florida, where he was yesterday morning, living on a boat in a West Palm Beach marina.
Moreno was charged with the rape and murder of Belluomini on November 22nd. His bail was set at $ 1 million. Moreno is awaiting extradition proceedings.
This is the third unresolved case by the Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
