The Chase Freedom Flexâ„  has become an even better deal for your year-end shopping.

Chase today announced a new temporary bonus category for Freedom Flex cardholders: you can earn 5% cash back on up to $ 1,500 spent in the eligible category you spend the most from October 1 on December 31. means you can potentially earn up to 9% cash back in certain categories this quarter.

The offer is available to both new Freedom Flex cardholders and those who already have the card in their wallet. However, it is only added to your account after activating your fourth quarter bonus categories. Eligible categories include travel (including transit), restaurants, home improvement stores, grocery stores (non-Target or Walmart), drugstores, gas stations, some live entertainment, some streaming services continuous and fitness clubs.

What makes this a great deal is the overlap between these eligible categories and Freedom Flex’s ongoing bonus categories. If your highest spending category happens to be one of the categories you’re already earning rewards for, such as travel or drugstores, you can increase your rewards and earn both bonuses.

Here’s what you need to know about the new Freedom Flex offer and how to maximize your rewards until the end of the year:

New 5% bonus in the highest spend category

With Chase’s new offer, you’ll earn an additional 5% cash back (a 4% cash back on top of the standard 1% you get on all purchases) in the qualifying category you spend the most – up to ‘to $ 1,500 in total expenses throughout the quarter. Your highest spending category is calculated at the end of the quarter, and Chase says it can take up to eight weeks for the bonus cash back to be posted to your account.

You can either spend as you normally would and leave your highest spending category within your usual budget, or be more strategic within your category. Choosing an eligible category to focus on can help you maximize your regular spending even more, as you can double the rewards categories that Freedom Flex already offers.

Pro tip

The Freedom Flex card can help you maximize your daily spending, but even the highest reward value won’t exceed a high interest credit card debt balance. Make sure you keep your expenses within your budget and only charge what you can afford to pay when your statement balance is due.

These are the qualifying categories available under the new offering, and how you can maximize each based on your regular spending.

To travel

Chase Freedom Flex already earns 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards. This means that if travel is your main spending category this quarter and you book that trip through Chase, you can earn up to 9% cash back on your spending (1% on each purchase, 4% added for trips booked through Chase, and another 4% added for the higher spending category).

If your primary expense category is unbooked travel (including transit) through Chase, you can still earn the full 5% cash back, but you won’t get the extra boost.

If you’re a new Chase Freedom Flex cardholder, you’ll earn 5% cash back on grocery expenses (up to $ 12,000 total) in the first year. If you’re still eligible for this new cardholder offer and grocery stores are where you spend the most this quarter, you can combine rewards for up to 9% cash back.

This is a 1% fixed cash back on everything, combined with an additional 4% discount on the new grocery cardholder offer and the 4% bonus when grocery shopping is your primary expense category this quarter.

Remember that Target and Walmart – as well as warehouse clubs like Costco – don’t count toward grocery expenses.

To eat

Dining earns a standard 3% cash back with the Chase Freedom Flex (1% on every purchase, plus an additional 2% bonus). If catering is your main spending category this quarter, you can now earn up to 7% cash back: 1% cashback on everything, 2% food category bonus, and the 4% bonus for your main category of expenditure.

Catering is broadly defined by Chase and can include everything from restaurants and fast food outlets to qualifying take-out and delivery services.

As with meals, Chase Freedom Flex purchases at drugstores earn a standard 3% discount. If drugstore spending is your main spending category this quarter, you can earn up to 7% total cash back (1% cash back on everything, the 2% bonus for pharmacy spending, and an additional 4% for your highest expense category).

Other eligible categories

Other categories that may be eligible for your top expense category include:

  • Petrol stations
  • Home improvement stores
  • Certain streaming services (only includes Disney +, Hulu, ESPN +, Netflix, Sling, Vudu, Fubo TV, Apple Music, SiriusXM, Pandora, Spotify, and YouTube TV)
  • Certain live entertainment (including ticket agencies and merchants that sell tickets to live events, tourist attractions, amusement parks, museums, etc.)
  • Fitness clubs and gym memberships

Since these categories are not already eligible for any bonus rewards with Freedom Flex, the maximum you will earn is 5% if any of them is your primary expense category for the quarter.

More Ways to Maximize the Chase Freedom Flex

The Chase Freedom Flex No Annual Fee is already one of our favorite cash back credit cards, and we think it’s one of the best cash back options available right now for your year-end spending. . Here are some other ways you can use it to maximize your daily spending:

5% rotating bonus categories

Beyond the standard bonus categories offered by Freedom Flex, you will get 5% cash back on up to $ 1,500 spent in rotating quarterly bonus categories. In 2021, these categories included:

2021 bonus categories
Q1: January to March Select streaming services, wholesale clubs, phone, cable and internet services
Q2: April – June Gas stations, home improvement stores
Q3: July – September Grocery stores (excluding Target and Walmart), some streaming services
Q4: October – December PayPal, Walmart

In addition to getting 5% cashback in your highest spending category this quarter, you can also earn up to 5% cashback at Walmart and when you pay with PayPal (up to a total of $ 1,500 spent). You will need to activate your fourth quarter bonus categories by December 14, 2021.

Since PayPal is a bonus category this quarter, it can also help you increase revenue for your highest spending category. If you use PayPal to make a purchase in your highest spending category, you can earn up to 9% total cash back on the purchase (1% on everything, 4% on quarterly PayPal bonus spending, and the additional 4% for your highest expenditure Category).

Welcome bonus

If you don’t already have a Freedom Flex card, your spending this quarter may also help you qualify for the card’s welcome bonus. You will get $ 200 cash back after spending at least $ 500 within three months of opening the account.

Plus, you’ll be eligible for increased rewards on groceries if it’s your highest spending category, as new cardholders can earn 5% cash back on grocery spending for the first year. (up to $ 12,000 spent).

Pair with a Chase Sapphire card

The Freedom Flex saves money, but you can also redeem your rewards for Chase Ultimate Rewards points. And if you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred® or Chase Sapphire Reserve® card, you can transfer your cash back rewards to your Sapphire account for even more redemption options and increased rewards value.

The Sapphire Preferred earns 1.25 cents per point, and the Sapphire Reserve can get a value of 1.5 cents per point when you redeem for travel through Chase. Plus, you can transfer your points to Chase travel partners with a Sapphire card, which can also increase your redemption value, depending on your trip.

If you already have a Sapphire card in your wallet, adding the Freedom Flex and combining your points can help you maximize your spending even more.

Suppose your main expense category this quarter is groceries, you are already a new cardholder eligible for 5% cash back on groceries, and you can get the maximum 9% cash back on a total of $ 1,500 in grocery expenses through December. That’s already a whopping $ 135 cash back. But when you transfer these rewards to your Sapphire Preferred account and redeem them for travel, you can get up to $ 168.75 in redemption value for your rewards.
