Tesco Mobile was the first supermarket to enter the mobile market and has made a name for itself when it comes to choice and customer service. Following the motto “every little help”, Tesco Mobile certainly helps customers with a range of flexible phone plans and valuable extras such as Clubcard points.

Tesco Mobile runs on the O2 network, so you know you’ll have strong mobile coverage, and it also doesn’t promise any mid-contract price hikes. Now well established as a mobile phone provider, Tesco competes comfortably with large mobile networks, but is it right for you? We look at what is proposed.

Rates & packages

Tesco Mobile offers a wide range of rates and plans. Depending on the handset you choose, Tesco offers contracts of 12, 18, 24, 30 or 36 months. You can choose not to pay anything up front, or you can pay up to a maximum of £ 180 to help lower your monthly repayments. You can pay for your handset anytime and upgrade to a new one or just use the SIM card only.

With its handset offerings, Tesco offers a choice of five data options, all with 5,000 SMS and 5,000 minutes (indeed – unlimited), ranging from a modest 3 GB to Unlimited.

Tesco also has a good range of SIM offers only available on 12 or 18 month contracts. These start at 2 GB with 500 minutes and 5,000 SMS and can go up to Unlimited with 5,000 minutes and 5,000 SMS. The vast majority of Tesco Mobile’s SIM-only offerings are available with 4G or 5G – at no additional cost for 5G.

Tesco Mobile also offers PAYG plans, which it calls contract-free SIM offers. These plans come in the form of Rocket Packs, or bundles, ranging from 2GB of data with 500 minutes and 5,000 texts, to 40GB with 5,000 minutes and 5,000 texts, depending on how much you want to top up.

If you don’t want a plan, you can always opt to go with the old PAYG and use your balance to pay for calls, texts, and minutes as you use them. To do this, you will need to deactivate your Rocket Pack via the Tesco Mobile app or by calling 282 from your handset. SMS costs 10 pence per message, calls cost 25 pence per minute, and data costs 10 pence per MB.

Tesco Mobile offers a wide choice of handsets to buy either with a SIM only offer or with a paid monthly contract. You’ll find all the latest flagship phones from Apple and Samsung, as well as handsets from Nokia, Motorola, Huawei, Sony, Alcatel, Doro, and IMO, which means there’s something for every budget.

Customer service

Tesco Mobile is highly rated among its customers. The latest industry data from Ofcom showed that 97% of Tesco Mobile customers were satisfied with the overall service, beating all other providers in the first place. It’s also well above the industry average of 93%.

It is also doing well in terms of complaints, with only 3% of customers having a complaint, in line with the industry average. And of those who had a reason to complain, 59% were happy with the way the complaint was handled, which doesn’t seem particularly high, but is above the industry average of 58% and above Virgin’s. Media (51%) and Vodafone (52%).

Customers also seem quite happy with the reliability of their mobile service. Ofcom data showed that 92% were happy with their Tesco Mobile reception, which is considerably better than the 85% shown as the industry average.

Tesco Mobile’s contact center has the industry’s second-shortest wait time at just 35 seconds (just beaten by BT with 34 seconds), compared to the industry average of 1:18 seconds. Value for money

Tesco Mobile offers great value for its SIM-only and handset offers, with additional benefits for Club cardholders.

Regular Clubcard holders will benefit from the association of their telephone with their Clubcard. This will allow you to collect a Clubcard point for every book you spend on your mobile bill. Customers who choose to purchase a PAYG handset can also claim Clubcard points on their purchase.

New Tesco Mobile customers can choose to register for Clubcard Plus free of charge for the first six months. This program allows monthly paying customers to double their phone plan data, as well as a 10% discount twice a month on in-store purchases at Tesco and 10% off select Tesco brands in-store, including including F&F clothes, Go Cook kitchen utensils, Fred & Flo baby range, Carousel toys, Tesco Pet and Fox & Ivy homeware.

After six months, the standard monthly price of £ 7.99 is payable, but you can cancel at any time.

Network coverage

Tesco Mobile uses the O2 network. This means you get 4G coverage over 99% of the UK and a decent spread of 5G coverage, although like other networks O2 is still rolling out its 5G, so it does is not as widely available as 4G.
